Godley Reservoir, Aerial Photography

The recent cold weather has brought clear skies and frosty mornings for this time of year. Making it an ideal time to catch the rays of sun as they begin to rise over the horizon.
With the recent changes in drone regulations, I am no longer restricted to flying in specific locations and must consider the weight and class of my drone. This has significantly simplified the process of flying within populated areas, as I no longer need to obtain permission and inform people within a designated radius. This is particularly advantageous as it opens up a wider range of potential photography locations.
This aerial image of Godley reservoir was captured recently, taking advantage of the early morning snow and ice. The sun’s rays have have perfectly illuminated the top of the snow-covered reservoir, highlighting the solar panels.
This is one of the largest floating solar panel arrays in Europe, producing around 2.7 GWh. The reservoir forms part of the Longdendale chain, which was first constructed and completed in 1851. The reservoir provides freshwater to Manchester. The installation by United Utilities in 2016 cost £3.5 million and comprises approximately 12,000 panels covering an area of around 4,500 square metres. It is said to provide at least 33% of the treatment works’ energy requirements.
There are several advantages to this type of installation, primarily that the water maintains the panels’ coolness, thereby enhancing their conversion efficiency. The expansive coverage inhibits algae growth and reduces evaporation.
It is more common to observe images like this during the warmer months, showcasing rolling green hills and warm summery tones. However I felt that the time of year provided an opportunity to create an alternative aesthetic, and it is also the only time of year when the sun would rise from that angle and skim across the surface of the reservoir.
